InterLibrary Loan Service & Policies

Maguire Medical Library Interlibrary Loan Services

Maguire Medical Library (MML) Interlibrary Loan (ILL) Services

The Maguire Medical Library’s Interlibrary Loan (ILL) service allows library patrons to request from other libraries materials that are not available in FSU Libraries’ collections. This service expands access to resources for research and educational needs for all members of the FSU College of Medicine (FSU COM). FSU scholars not affiliated with FSU COM should refer to FSU Libraries’ ILL Services.

As the Maguire Medical Library is a digital library with a specialized collection, our ILL services prioritize fulfilling requests for electronic or digital material in the biomedical, behavioral, and life-sciences subject areas.

ILL services for the College of Medicine are provided through two separate systems: UBorrow and Maguire Medical Library ILL. UBorrow is operated by FSU Libraries as part of Florida’s State University System (SUS) and allows users to borrow print materials from libraries across the state; additional information on UBorrow is available on the FSU UBorrow page. Maguire Medical Library ILL permits users to borrow materials from libraries across the country, with a concentration in other medical libraries and electronic requests.

For questions or assistance with ILL requests, please contact ILL services at: medlibrary@med.fsu.edu.

FSU Libraries Library Express Delivery Service (LEDS)

Library Express Delivery Service (LEDS) delivers FSU Libraries’ materials for current FSU faculty members, graduate students, and staff. The Maguire Medical Library is a designated pickup location.

Read more about LEDS, including how to register, access collections, and request library materials for pickup or delivery.

Maguire Medical Library Interlibrary Loan Policies

  • MML ILL services are available to all FSU College of Medicine affiliates [students, faculty, staff, and fellows/residents] in good standing, with an active FSU Libraries account.
  • UBorrow requests are available to all FSU affiliates in good standing, with an active FSU Libraries account.
Electronic/Digital ILL Request
Physical ILL Request
  • Patrons can request articles, books, book chapters, and other eligible materials not owned by FSU Libraries.
Exclusions

While every effort will be made to fulfill all ILL requests, some materials are not available to request from lending libraries for a variety of reasons. Below is a list of the most denied materials for ILL requests:

  • Materials that are already owned by our library or are currently on order.
  • Textbooks, rare/antique books, fragile items, DVDs/CDs, and popular fiction/non-fiction reading material.
    • Some rare/antique books and items may be available through digitization/scanning projects; please contact the Maguire Medical Library ILL Department directly for assistance with these requests.
  • Digital or electronic resources that are restricted by copyright laws.
  • Materials that exceed the library’s price per request threshold (>$100 per request) or that are otherwise deemed too cost prohibitive for the library to obtain.
    • If a request is too cost prohibitive, the ILL Department will notify the patron for alternative solutions.

  • Electronic/Digital Article Requests: electronic items, such as articles and e-book chapters, typically take 1-3 business days to process and fulfill.
    • Rare or difficult to source electronic requests may require up to 14 business days to fulfill; patrons will be notified if their request exceeds 7 business days.
  • Print Material Requests: print material requests typically require 7-21 business days to process and fulfill due to shipping requirements.
  • UBorrow Requests: See the FSU Libraries’ UBorrow page for more information on UBorrow request processing time.
Electronic/Digital ILL Requests
  • Electronic or digital ILL requests will be delivered to patrons as a protected PDF file via email from the Maguire Medical Library email account: medlibrary@med.fsu.edu.
    • If a specific patron email address is not provided, the requested item will be sent to the patron’s default FSU email address.
Physical ILL Requests
  • All physical UBorrow and ILL requests must be picked up at the Maguire Medical Library on the Tallahassee campus. Physical ILL requests will not be shipped to other locations for pickup.
    • Patrons who are eligible for LEDS may request delivery to their campus office.
Distance Borrowers
  • The Maguire Medical Library does not order or ship physical ILL requests to distance borrowers. If a requested item is only available in print, or if a distance borrower requires a physical copy to meet a unique need, please contact the Maguire Medical Library ILL Department directly to discuss your ILL request.
Lending Period
  • All ILL item loan periods are determined by the lending library and will be communicated to the patron at the time of pickup.
ILL Renewals
  • Renewals may be requested for any physical ILL item but are subject to the lending library’s approval. Patrons must contact the Maguire Medical Library Interlibrary Loan Department at least three days before the due date to request a renewal.
    • In some cases, renewals may be submitted via a patron’s account in OneSearch; however, patrons must still contact the Maguire Medical Library Interlibrary Loan Department directly to confirm the renewal.
  • See the FSU Libraries’ UBorrow page for more information on UBorrow renewals.
  • All physical ILL and UBorrow materials must be returned to the Maguire Medical Library by the stated due date.
    • If a physical ILL or UBorrow item is returned to another FSU library, patrons may be responsible for any overdue or lost item fines or fees.
  • Items must be returned in the same condition as when borrowed.
    • If an ILL item is returned damaged, patrons will be responsible for any associated fines/fees.
  • MML ILL Fees: There is no fee for requesting items. Maguire Medical Library provides ILL requests to all FSU COM affiliates free of charge.
  • Overdue Fines & Replacement Fees: Patrons are responsible for any overdue fines, damage, or replacement fees for ILL items, as set by the lending library.

Failure to comply with the Maguire Medical Library’s ILL policies, or to pay any fines/fees levied on ILL items, may result in temporary suspension of ILL privileges, library account restrictions, and/or a complete loss of ILL privileges.

Please contact the Maguire Medical Library Interlibrary Loan Department directly if you have any questions or concerns regarding ILL services or your account.
